Getting to La Croix-Valmer: Airports, Trains and Transfers Guide

TravelLocationGuide

La Croix-Valmer sits on the southern tip of the Saint-Tropez peninsula, and unlike Saint-Tropez itself, it has no train station and no direct motorway exit — which makes planning the journey worth doing properly. Here is every practical route in, with realistic timings.

By air: three airports to choose from

Toulon-Hyères Airport (TLN) — the closest

Toulon-Hyères is the nearest airport to La Croix-Valmer, roughly 45 to 50 minutes away by car under normal conditions. It has a more limited schedule than Nice, with routes mainly to French cities and a handful of European destinations, but for anyone flying from within France, or connecting through Paris, it is usually the fastest door-to-door option.

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) — the widest choice

Nice is France’s second-busiest airport and by far the best-connected to the UK, the rest of Europe and North America, with a large number of direct routes. The trade-off is distance: allow around 1h20 to 1h30 by car outside peak season. In July and August, congestion on the coastal roads between Fréjus and Sainte-Maxime can stretch that same journey to two hours or more, so if you are travelling in high summer, build in a buffer or consider a helicopter transfer (see below). For most travellers coming from the UK, the US or Northern Europe, Nice is the practical choice despite the extra drive time, simply because of how many direct flights serve it.

Marseille Provence Airport (MRS) — worth checking for price and timing

Marseille sits further away, around 1h45 by car, but occasionally offers competitive fares or better flight times, particularly from certain UK and Northern European cities. It is a reasonable third option if Nice and Toulon-Hyères don’t line up with your schedule.

By train: two stations, then a transfer

Saint-Tropez and La Croix-Valmer are not served directly by rail — the nearest TGV stations both require a onward transfer by car, taxi or bus.

Les Arcs–Draguignan is the closer of the two, around 40 minutes from Saint-Tropez by road, and is served by TGV trains on the Paris–Marseille–Nice line. It tends to be the more convenient rail option for reaching the peninsula.

Toulon station also sits on the same high-speed line, with more frequent services, but is a little further from La Croix-Valmer than Les Arcs, with a drive of just over an hour depending on the route.

From either station, a pre-booked private transfer is by far the simplest option — public buses exist but run infrequently and are not designed around luggage or group travel. If your journey starts in Paris, the train to Les Arcs or Toulon takes a little under six hours, so for most international travellers flying into Nice or Toulon-Hyères remains quicker door-to-door.

Private transfers by road

Given that La Croix-Valmer has no train station of its own, a private chauffeur transfer is usually the simplest option, whether arriving at Nice, Toulon-Hyères or Marseille. It removes the need to navigate an unfamiliar rental car through the coastal roads’ summer traffic, and a driver who knows the area will typically route around the worst congestion points on the RD98 during peak season. Our concierge, included with every stay, can arrange transfers from any of the three airports or either train station as part of your booking.

If you do prefer to self-drive, allow generous buffer time in July and August specifically — the coastal road between Fréjus, Sainte-Maxime and the peninsula is the single biggest variable in any journey estimate on this stretch of coast.

By helicopter

For a fast and scenic arrival, a helicopter transfer from Nice Airport to La Môle–Saint-Tropez Airport takes around 20 minutes, compared with two to three hours by road during peak summer traffic. Several operators run scheduled and charter helicopter services between Nice and La Môle, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive from La Croix-Valmer, in season. It is a premium option, but for a short stay in high summer where every hour matters, it removes the single biggest source of unpredictability in the journey.

By boat

From April to October, Trans Côte d’Azur runs seasonal ferry services to Saint-Tropez from Cannes (around 1h45) and Nice (around 2h30). It is a scenic and relaxed way to arrive if your schedule allows for it, though it is worth noting that Saint-Tropez port itself is a 15 to 20 minute drive from La Croix-Valmer, so a road or taxi transfer is still needed at the end of the crossing. Villa Canopy also has a private mooring buoy off Gigaro beach for guests arriving by their own boat along the coast.

Our recommendation by traveller profile

Flying from the UK or Northern Europe: Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, for the widest choice of direct flights, with a pre-booked private transfer for the 1h20–1h30 drive.

Flying from within France, or with flexible dates: Toulon-Hyères Airport, for the shortest transfer at around 45 minutes.

Arriving by train from Paris or elsewhere in France: Les Arcs–Draguignan, then a private transfer for the final 40 minutes.

Short stay in peak summer, budget allowing: consider a helicopter transfer from Nice to skip the coastal road traffic entirely.

Once you’ve settled on dates, our month-by-month guide to visiting Saint-Tropez can help you weigh season against crowds and road traffic before booking your flights.

FAQ

Which airport is closest to La Croix-Valmer?

Toulon-Hyères Airport, at around 45 to 50 minutes by car. Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is further, at roughly 1h20 to 1h30, but has far more direct international routes.

Is there a train station in La Croix-Valmer or Saint-Tropez?

No. The nearest TGV stations are Les Arcs–Draguignan (around 40 minutes from Saint-Tropez) and Toulon (just over an hour), both requiring a road transfer to finish the journey.

How long does the drive from Nice Airport take in summer?

Under normal conditions it is around 1h20 to 1h30, but from mid-July to mid-August, traffic on the coastal road can stretch this to two to three hours. A helicopter transfer to La Môle is a popular alternative for that period.

Can Villa Canopy arrange our transfer?

Yes. Airport and train station transfer arrangements are part of the concierge service included with your stay.

Is arriving by boat realistic?

Yes, either via the seasonal Trans Côte d’Azur ferry from Cannes or Nice, or by private boat using the villa’s private mooring buoy off Gigaro beach. A short road transfer is still needed from Saint-Tropez port to the villa.
